Baldwin takes both MIL championshipsApril 29, 2012
WAILUKU - Call this night all about coronations. The Baldwin High School boys showed they are legitimate state title contenders with their remarkable depth atop the charts, and easily ran away to their seventh straight Maui Interscholastic League crown on Saturday night at the Yamamoto Track & Field Facility. The Bears won six events and placed second five other times to swamp the boys field with 175 points, 77 more than runner-up King Kekaulike. Maui High was third with 78. Perhaps the most impressive marks were Keelan Ewaliko's personal record of 22 feet, 1 1/2 inches in the long jump - 9 3/4 inches in front of second place - and the 15.11-second time in the 110-meter hurdles by Vetekina Malafu while fighting a swirly wind. "I keep saying we have got to show up first," Baldwin coach Gary Sanches said when asked if his team will be a contender at the state meet, scheduled for May 11-12 on the Big Island. "We shall see in two weeks. Our joke this week was over milk. The kids don't understand that a bottle of milk before, the cream was at the top, when you shake it it dissolves, but you let it sit, the cream rises to the top again. "We were trying to explain to them 'the cream will rise to the top.' They had a hard time trying to figure that out, but they started getting it this week. We don't have milkmen any more." Kristine Felix capped one of the most diverse and successful track and field careers ever on Maui with four individual titles - in the pole vault, long jump, 100 and 200 - that helped the Bears gain a measure of revenge in the girls meet. Last year, eventual state runner-up Seabury Hall broke Baldwin's streak of 11 straight MIL girls team crowns. On Saturday, behind Felix, the Bears put up 168 points, 28 more than the Spartans. Kamehameha Maui had 47 to edge Maui High by two for third. "It feels pretty good, our team's main goal from the beginning of the season was to get that team title back," Baldwin girls coach Keoni Tengan said. "We had a couple of hurdles during the season. We didn't have a stadium to practice in for the first couple weeks (as War Memorial Stadium underwent repairs). Then we had to close JV championships for the (University of Hawaii) football practice. "Overall, we have been healthy, we worked hard and everybody did what they had to do." That includes Felix, the 5-foot-1 dynamo who has lifted the state pole vault record by 20 inches in winning the last two titles and is headed to Washington State in the fall on a track and field scholarship. Felix is going for her third straight pole vault title, but is also looking at the 100 and long jump, challenges she has never undertaken at the state meet. "As far as her four gold medals, we have been hoping that she would do four events since her freshman year," Tengan said. "But due to injury, due to other circumstances, that was impossible. This year she really wanted to bring back the title, to battle for that. Because of her fire it fired up Amber Kozaki. Those two really wanted to beat each other in every event." That battle went back and forth all season until Felix stepped out on Saturday. Kozaki did not clear a bar in the pole vault, finished fourth in the 100 and was second in the long jump. Both were on the victorious 400 relay team. Felix had to race from the pole vault runway, cross the field to the long jump pit and make sure she was on time for her sprints. "It was pretty exhausting, I am not going to lie," Felix said after posting times of 12.51 in the 100 and 26.51 in the 200, going 17-4 3/4 in the long jump and clearing 11-3 in the pole vault. "I had to run back and forth and all over the place. I wish I had more conditioning." At WSU, "It will be primarily pole vault," Felix said. "If they can use me for anything else, possibly long jump, but I don't think I am fast enough in the sprints." That means the state meet might be the last in which she competes in multiple events. "I am going to do pole vault and long jump, for sure, the 100," she said. "I'm debating the relay and the 200. I will just do my best and whatever happens, happens." Felix will miss Kozaki, a junior, next year. "She definitely makes me better," Felix said. "It is kind of hard practicing with your competition, but at the same time, it pushes you. It pushed me a lot this year." The boys' double winners were Ewaliko in the long jump and 200, after he was beaten by 0.08 seconds in the 100; Maui High's Nicola Perez-Garreaud in the 1,500 and 3,000; and Baldwin's Tyler Feiteira in the 300 hurdles and pole vault. Malafu is a state contender in both hurdle events, the dashes and the long jump, and Pasoni Tasini has a good chance in the discus and shot put. Miki Fangatua and B.J. Wilhelm-Ioane both look like scorers in the throws. "Keelan in the 200 and the long jump, Kina kind of tweaked his ankle in the long jump but he came back and ran one hell of a hurdles race," Sanches said. "Then Tyler (Feiteira) ran the race of his life in the 110s and then came back and won the 300s and the pole vault. Miki threw 50 feet, B.J. threw 50 feet - we have never had three boys on one team ever throw 50 feet. So, you know, it was a complete team effort." * Robert Collias is at [email protected] _______________ MIL TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS Saturday's Results At Yamamoto Track & Field Facility Girls Team scores 1. Baldwin, King Kekaulike finish 1-2 in boys state track and field championshipsMay 13, 2012
KEAAU, Hawaii - In the spirit of making their island proud, the Baldwin and King Kekaulike high school boys track and field teams dominated the Island Movers State Track and Field Championships. The Bears produced points throughout Saturday's competition for the school's first team title, and Na Alii gave the Maui Interscholastic League a sweep of the first two spots at Keaau High School Stadium. Baldwin had two individual champions - Pasoni Tasini in the discus and Keelan Ewaliko in the 200 meters. Tasini fouled on all three of his attempts Saturday, but his monster throw of 171 feet, 4 inches on Friday carried over into the finals. Ewaliko also helped the Bears win the 400 relay, one of the bigger surprises. Top-seeded Keaau took an early lead, but Baldwin kept a stride behind, making the most of each baton handoff to pull out the hotly contested victory. Ryne Yokouchi led off, followed by Vetekina Malafu, Aaron Marzan and Ewaliko. "This was really big for us," Ewaliko said. "We are making Maui proud." The Bears won in 43.10 seconds, with Keaau having a baton miscue on its second leg to finish in 43.15. "We didn't want to be cocky," said Ewaliko, who ran the 200 in 22.49. "We had the confidence to win the relay as we worked hard during practice and it paid off." Baldwin scored in nine events over the two days. "We have a target on our backs," Bears coach Ardis Anguay said prior to Saturday's finals. "Our boys worked hard this season and if they do exactly what they are supposed to do we'll be successful." Tasini was second in the shot put, Malafu was second in the 110 hurdles, and Tyler Feitera was the runner-up in the 300 hurdles. "Every point counts," Malafu said. "Our coach told us to go all out to win the team title." Baldwin finished with 63 points, and King Kekaulike had 42, one better than Punahou, winner of the previous two titles and 32 altogether. Na Alii's Michael Teves won the pole vault title Friday. On Saturday, Jansen Agapay was second in the long jump and triple jump, and Jake Jacobs was the 400 runner-up. "This is our highest finish at a state track meet," said King Kekaulike coach James Alger. "We never expected this and it exceeds our expectations." Alger and his team were headed to the exits prior to the announcement of the top boys teams and were asked to return before the awards were given out. "The kids worked hard and we beat Punahou by one point," Alger said. "For us this is a real surprise." Maui High's Nicola Perez-Garreaud won the 3,000 in 9:14.79. "I knew if I only ran the 3K I would have a better chance of winning because of the depth and quality of the runners in the (1,500)," he said. "I was super nervous before the race and felt weird. I calmed down during the race with each lap and I was going for the win and didn't care about my time because I was just giving it my all." Maui High had been the only MIL team to win a championship, taking the titles in 1987 and 1995. Seabury Hall's Dakota Grossman was the queen of distance running, repeating as the 3,000 champion in 10:45.64 and adding the title in the 1,500 as well - her time in that race was 4:43.53, a quarter of a second faster than the defending champ, Zoe Sims of Hawaii Prep. "I liked where I was in the 1,500, and with the girls I was running with I managed to run my personal best," said Grossman, a sophomore who also owns two state cross country titles. "I ran a 4:43 and pulled the race out in the final 50 meters." Baldwin's Kristine Felix won a third straight girls pole vault title, clearing 12-0. She holds the state-meet record of 12-6, set last year at Yamamoto Track & Field Facility. The Bears finished fifth in the girls team standings with 34 points, and the Spartans were sixth with 29. Punahou won a fourth straight title, and 34th in school history, with 75.4 points. _______________ ISLAND MOVERS TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS Friday's and Saturday's Finals At Keaau x-Meet record Boys Team standings-1.
